General tips that apply everywhere
- Always export at 2× the minimum. Retina screens (most modern phones and laptops) display images at 2× pixel density. A 600×600px image looks blurry on a Retina screen if the actual content requires 1200×1200px.
- Use JPEG for photos, PNG for graphics with text. Platform compression algorithms are brutal on JPEG artefacts in text — if your post has words or logos, PNG or WebP handles it better.
- Keep critical content away from edges. Most platforms crop to fit the feed thumbnail. A safe zone of 80% of the frame in the centre keeps faces and text visible.
- File size limits: Most platforms cap uploads at 10–30MB. Instagram caps videos at 100MB. Compress before uploading to avoid re-compression by the platform (which degrades quality).
- WebP works on all major platforms as of 2024. Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter all accept WebP uploads. Using WebP means smaller files and faster uploads.
